Haut-Lomami, Katanga (RD Congo), 1^er juin 2014. Un trek se met en marche depuis le ranch de la société GRELKA à Luniemo (Kamina), qui conduira un troupeau de 500 vaches et bœufs le long de la mythique Nationale 1, jusqu’à sa destination : le ranch de Biano, à proximité de Likasi et Kolwezi. Soit une distance de 450 kilomètres parcourue à pied pendant vingt jours par le bétail et la quarantaine d’hommes qui l’accompagne : les bouviers ou « trekkeurs ». Une aventure incroyable, qui a lieu plusieurs fois par an, où hommes et bêtes affrontent ensemble les aléas climatiques, la poussière, la fatigue et les risques inhérents à un tel périple à travers la brousse katangaise. Le recours à ces treks ancestraux s’explique par l’état défaillant des infrastructures routières et du rail qui ne permettent plus l’acheminement des animaux par ce biais. Ces transhumances ayant pour but d’approvisionner en viande locale les principales villes de la province et de répondre ainsi à la demande en bœuf croissante des travailleurs et de la population, consécutive au redéploiement économique de la région.

Haut-Lomani, Katanga (DR Congo), 1st of June 2014. A trek starts from the ranch of the GRELKA company in Luniemo (Kamina), which will lead a herd of 500 cows and oxen along the mythical National 1 until his destination: the Biano ranch, near Likasi and Kolwezi. A distance of 450 km hiked for twenty days by the cattle and the forty men who accompany : the herdsmen or « trekkers ». An incredible adventure, which takes place several times a year, where men and animals face together the weather, dust, rigours and risks of such a journey through the Katanga bush. The use of these ancestral treks can be explained by the defective condition of the roads and rail which no longer allow the animal to be transported through it. These cattle drives aim to supply local meat to the main cities of the province and meet the growing beef demand of workers and local population, following the economical boom of the region.
